On Saturday, a group of us got together to study the book of Daniel, specifically ways to hear the voice of the Lord more clearer. Below you will find the notes/scriptures of what we discussed.

Learning to Hear God's Voice—and What We Can Do Practically to Hear It
Main Theme
God is always speaking, but throughout the book of Daniel we learn that hearing His voice requires a heart that is surrendered, obedient, humble, prayerful, and willing to sacrifice.
1. Stand Firm in Your Decision to Walk with Christ—Favor Will Follow
Daniel chose not to defile himself with the king's food. He respectfully pushed back against authority because his desire was to honor the Lord above everything else.

Notice that Daniel wasn't rebellious. He was wise, respectful, and confident in his convictions.
He also stepped out in faith, trusting that if he remained obedient for ten days, God would prove that His way was better—not only for Daniel, but for those around him.

Because of their obedience, God honored them.

God gave Daniel and his friends wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and the ability to interpret dreams and visions.

2. Invite Wise Community Into Your Prayers
Sometimes God speaks through the prayers of His people.
In Daniel chapter 2, King Nebuchadnezzar demanded that someone interpret his dream. None of the magicians or astrologers could do it, and everyone faced execution—including Daniel.
Instead of panicking, Daniel immediately sought out his friends and asked them to pray with him.

God answered their prayers by revealing the mystery to Daniel.
Notice that the blessing didn't stop with Daniel.
Because they sought the Lord together, his friends also experienced God's favor.

Wise community helps us discern God's voice. Scripture tells us to "test all things," and trusted believers help us do exactly that.
3. When the Test Arrives, Remember God's Faithfulness
The trials didn't stop for Daniel and his friends.
In chapter 2, they faced the threat of death.
Their first response wasn't fear—it was prayer.

Later, in chapter 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow before the golden image.
God didn't keep them from the fire—He met them in it.

Because of God's presence:

Not a hair on their heads was singed, their clothes were untouched, and they didn't even smell like smoke.
King Nebuchadnezzar responded by declaring:
"For no other god can save in this way." (Daniel 3:29)

When new tests come, don't forget old victories. If He hasn't failed you before, He won't begin now. In His perfect timing, He will speak.
4. Humility Creates Space to Hear God
We're going to jump ahead a bit.
Chapters 4–7 contain a series of dreams, warnings, trials, and ultimately Daniel's experience in the lions' den.
One theme appears over and over again:
God opposes pride but honors humility.
The kings before Daniel struggled with pride, idolatry, self-exaltation, and dependence on their own wisdom. Their unwillingness to humble themselves ultimately led to their downfall.
Daniel, however, consistently remained humble before the Lord.

5. Fast—Sacrifice Your Flesh to Hear From the Lord
Our final point is this:
Sometimes hearing God's voice requires intentionally quieting our own.
Daniel chapter 9 gives us a beautiful picture of someone posturing themselves before God through prayer, repentance, and fasting.

Daniel didn't only confess his own sins.
He stood in the gap for the entire nation of Israel.

It was in this posture of humility, fasting, and prayer that God answered him.

Then in chapter 10, Daniel begins what we now call the Daniel Fast.

While Daniel was fasting, the Lord encouraged him and spoke to him.

When Daniel felt weak, God strengthened him.

Throughout the book of Daniel, we see the same pattern again and again:
Obedience positions us to hear God.
Community helps us discern God's voice.
Remembering His faithfulness gives us courage in new trials.
Humility keeps our hearts teachable.
Prayer and fasting quiet our flesh so we can hear Him more clearly.
The Lord still speaks today.
The question isn't whether God is speaking.
The question is whether we are positioning ourselves to listen.
